How is our BAC calculator different from others?

Nearly all of the alcohol calculators in the market today are based on the Widmark formula. The Widmark formula is a straight line equation and is only good at explaining the maximum absorption rate you will reach when you drink. It also does not consider age or height, which can affect your BAC percentages.

The Watson formula was developed after the Widmark formula. This is also a straight line equation but it is a bit more sophisticated in how it figures out volume of distribution. Unlike the Widmark formula, it takes into consideration age and height. Because it is a straight line equation, like the Widmark, it will only tell you the maximum absorption rate (or your max BAC percentage) and not how long it will take to get there.

This is a great limitation with many of the alcohol calculators in the market today.

The Kinetics model, developed by Jay Godfrey from CG Labs, is one of the most sophisticated formulas in the market today. It is the basis of which we’ve developed our state of the art BAC calculator.

Within this model, it takes into consideration how fast the stomach empties, how quickly alcohol moves into the intestines and finally how long it takes to eliminate alcohol from the body.  The easiest way to understand the differences between our BAC calculator model and Widmark/Watson models is:

The Kinetics model will tell you how long it will take to get to maximum BAC levels and how long it will take to get to a zero BAC percentage.

For example, if you look at the graph above, we have charted the 3 different models. This example shows a 120 lb female, 5’3, who has had 3 glasses of wine.

The Widmark and Watson examples immediately start at the highest BAC percentage of .116 (Watson) and .123 (Widmark) while it takes the Kinetics model nearly 2 1/2 hours to reach a maximum BAC percentage of .086. The Watson and Widmark examples assume she immediately drank 3 glasses of wine. Most people spread their drinks out over a certain time period. The Kinetics model takes this time into consideration.

Therefore, if this person were to use a BAC calculator on the internet today – it would probably tell her that 3 drinks = .123 BAC percentage. Our model shows a .086 BAC percentage. This is a big difference.

Please keep in mind that alcohol calculators are meant to inform and educate the public on their BAC limits. You should never drink and drive.

Who uses the Kinetics formula?

The Kinetics formula is based on a combination of published models within the market.

It has been used in court – by DUI lawyers, state and county governments to negate or verify a person’s BAC  level at the time he/she was pulled over.

Here are some DUI Lawyers that have used these formulas:

  • Law Office of Mark Stevens
  • Law office of Leonard Harden
  • Schwartz & Schwartz
  • Elliott & MacLean
  • Thomas W Costello

The purpose of our BAC Calculator is to

  • educate people on how many drinks they can have before they are over the limit
  • educate people on how long it takes to get to the max BAC limit and
  •  how long it takes to eliminate alcohol from the body

While no alcohol calculator will tell you with 100% accuracy your BAC percentage, this model provides guidelines that will help you to understand your drinking limits.
